Reading Elder Futhark Runes - Understanding The First, Second & Third Aett

Reading Elder Futhark Runes - Understanding The First, Second & Third Aett

If you’ve arrived here from our What are Runes? blog post, or you’re ready to deepen your understanding and begin learning how to read runes, the next essential step is becoming familiar with the three rune families.  Understanding these families provides a powerful framework that will help you interpret and decode the meaning of each individual rune with greater clarity and confidence.

The runes are traditionally divided into three sacred family groups, known as Aetts:

  1. The First Aett - Freyr's Aett
  2. The Second Aett - Heimdall's Aett
  3. The Third Aett - Tyr's Aett

Together, the Aetts map the unfolding movement of energy, revealing where a question sits within the greater cycle of life. They allow the runes to be read in relationship and context rather than in isolation.  Each Aett carries its own distinct tone, rhythm and teachings, reflecting the Norse understanding of fate, becoming and consequence.

Freyr's Aett - The First Aett

Freyr’s Aett governs life as it enters form.  In rune readings, it speaks to new beginnings and the foundations upon which life is built - covering relationships, finances, health and personal power within our world.  This Aett reflects the early stages of creation, where energy becomes tangible and survival gives rise to structure and growth.

Freyr’s Aett is concerned with:

  • Survival and resources

  • Physical strength and vitality

  • Communication and learning

  • Relationships and energetic exchange

  • Joy, harmony and a sense of belonging

The eight runes that make up Freyr’s Aett are:

Fehu, Uruz, Thurisaz, Ansuz, Raidho, Kenaz, Gebo and Wunjo.

Heimdall's Aett - The Second Aett

Heimdall’s Aett is the initiatory threshold of the rune cycle, governing challenge, transformation and spiritual maturation.  It marks pivotal turning points - karmic lessons, trials of endurance and necessary endings that clear the way for growth.  In readings, this Aett appears when circumstances can no longer remain as they are.

It asks powerful, uncompromising questions: What must be broken or released for true evolution to occur? What must be endured in order to transform?

Heimdall’s Aett is concerned with:

  • Crisis and the breaking of old patterns

  • Limitation, pressure and constraint

  • Stillness and enforced pauses

  • Death–rebirth cycles and deep transformation

  • Fate, mystery and spiritual protection

  • Illumination earned through struggle

The eight runes contained within Heimdall’s Aett are:

Hagalaz, Nauthiz, Isa, Jera, Eihwaz, Perthro, Algiz and Sowilo

Tyr's Aett - The Third Aett

Tyr’s Aett governs conscious choice, spiritual authority and the embodiment of higher truth.  In rune readings, this Aett speaks to soul work, leadership, purpose and ancestral patterns - revealing what you are here to fully embody, as well as what must be released or left behind.  It represents the maturation of the rune journey, where awareness becomes responsibility and wisdom is lived, not merely understood.

Tyr’s Aett is concerned with:

  • Integrity, justice and sacred sacrifice

  • Healing, renewal and regeneration

  • Partnership, movement and forward momentum

  • Identity, self-awareness and conscious presence

  • Intuition and deep energetic flow

  • Completion, awakening and spiritual inheritance

The eight runes that comprise Tyr’s Aett are:

Tiwaz, Berkano, Ehwaz, Mannaz, Laguz, Ingwaz, Dagaz and Othala
