Handmade in Mauritius — a tiny island embraced by the Indian Ocean off Africa’s coast — Paradox Elements brings you the Mauritian Ravanne drum.

More than an instrument, the Ravanne is a living vessel of rhythm, memory and ancestral voice. It is not simply played — it is awakened.

Traditionally crafted from wood and lapo cabri (goat skin), the Ravanne carries the primal pulse of Mauritius.  Its voice is earthy and resonant, shaped by fire, hands and intention.  When gently warmed, the lapo cabri tightens and the drum comes alive, releasing deep, echoing rhythms that feel as ancient as the island itself.

Born during the era of enslavement, Sega — Mauritius’ traditional music and dance — and the Ravanne that leads it emerged as expressions of survival, remembrance and freedom.  Communities of African, Malagasy and Indian origin turned to rhythm when words were denied to them.  Through music and movement, culture endured, emotions were released and spiritual connection was preserved.  That lineage still resonates every time the Ravanne is played.

Each drum is a testament to intergenerational craftsmanship, with knowledge passed hand to hand, skin to skin, beat to beat.  No two Ravannes are ever identical; each carries its own voice, shaped by maker, player and moment.

The Ravanne provides the grounding heartbeat that guides, music, dance and trance. Its vibrations carry a deeply connecting quality, capable of drawing listeners back to land, lineage and collective memory.

Whether played, displayed or honoured as a cultural artefact, the Ravanne holds undeniable presence. It is truly:

A drum of memory.
A rhythm of freedom.
A heartbeat you can hold.

Our large-sized Ravanne drum measures approximately 45cm in diameter and weighs around 1000g.  Each drum comes complete with a beautifully designed carry bag, featuring vibrant illustrations of a traditional Mauritian Sega band and dancer that capture the spirit, colour and cultural heritage of the island.
